Share the Book Love!

I love giving books as gifts for just about any occasion: birthdays, baby showers, holiday events and those ‘just because’ moments in between. There is something thrilling about finding the right book for the right person to celebrate or commemorate a special occasion. As my daughter and I book-shopped for a friend of hers turning eleven, we brainstormed the possible books she might love, drawing on our own favorites. As the date to her party loomed closer, we realized we would not make it to the bookstore on time. We were both a bit upset that we could not gift our carefully chosen present. We knew the power that comes from receiving a book that someone spent time hand-choosing just for you. As we thought of what to do, I realized that the power of receiving a book that someone hand-chose for you did not happen because the book was new. It happened because someone took the time to carefully and personally choose a book based on who you were and what you loved..

Books from the start!
So, a new tradition began. Rather than purchase a new book to gift to family and friends, we started sharing our own books, well-read and loved, with handwritten messages inside and wrapped with a beautiful bow. Imagine how beautiful these introductory pages would be with the heartfelt words from one reader to another over time? It shows that books are meant to be savored, enjoyed, devoured and most importantly, shared with others. So the next time to you want to gift a new book to another reader, mine your own collection of books that touched your heart and made a difference in your life and share one instead. Include a personalized message for the next reader and share the book love near and far!

  1. I love this idea! Except for the part that I would need to part with some beloved books for it to work. I buy many used books. I often wonder about the inscriptions inside them and the original owners. I used to think, how could they part with this book? Now I'll just think of them sending the book into the world to bless other readers. It's time for me to bless the world because our book collection is far too large to lug along when we downsize (sometime in the next decade).
